National vehicle emission control commences September- DG NESREA

The National Environmental Standards and Regulation Enforcement Agency (NESREA), has said that, the National Vehicular Emission Control Programme (NVECP) designed to usher in better air quality in Nigeria will begin by of the end of September, 2017.
This was made known by the Director-General of NESREA, Dr Lawrence Anukam, recently in Abuja during an interactive session with Stakeholders and potential operators of the programme.
Dr Anukam emphasized that “what has taken the Agency months of careful planning in ensuring hitch-free launch was at the final stages”.
The DG told the stakeholders and participants that the Pilot phase would first commence in Abuja, before nationwide launch. “This is going to involve a lot of public enlightenment and sensitization to ensure the success of the programme”.
A statement signed by Deputy Director(Information)Sule Oyofo stated that NESREA in collaboration with other sectors of the government which includes Customs Service, Nigeria Police, Federal Road Safety Corps, Vehicle Inspection Officers, National Union of Road Transport Workers, among others.
He said : “We are convinced that with the participation of our sister Agencies the success of this programme is guaranteed”.
Dr Anukam explained that what was needed was proper enforcement to ensure that the level of emission is brought under control.
“The operational guidelines and regulations are now in place for the smooth conduct of this programme”, Dr. Anukam maintained.
He averts that the NVECP program runs under Public Private Partnership arrangement for which intended operators are to run Testing Centres using standard Equipment in accordance to approve guidelines with Federal Government Regulatory Agencies responsible for enforcing compliance.
Meanwhile, The programme which is also obtained in developed countries , will help in reducing organic pollutants in stationary and mobile vehicles.
