Windstorm destroys 470 houses, kills livestock in Kebbi

From Ahmed Idris Birnin Kebbi A torrential rain(Windstorm) experienced in kebbi state yesterday has destroyed 470 houses Maiyama Local Government Area. The heavy windstorm also resulted in the injury of livestock and 8 persons who were injured and hospitalized. Speaking to newsmen yesterday in his office, Sole Administrator of Maiyama ,Alhaji Haliru Sambawa, said that the storm commenced at about 4:am. "The storm was horrific and violent and no fewer than 470 houses have been destroyed, many livestock dead, and properties worth millions including public buildings schools, electricity poles and the Maiyama General Hospital were damaged. "We are still assessing the damage as we have set up four committees of seven men each to investigate and assess the extent of the damage and destructions, "he said. He said, no death was recorded but eight persons sustained injuries including fractures sequel to the storm. Sambawa said the council had to engaged the service of additional doctors and nurses from Jega Local Government Area to assist in prompt first aid emergency services to people. He said the council also procured and distributed drugs to the victims of minor and severe injuries. The sole administrator, however, appealed to the state government and federal government to come to the aid of the council, adding ," we have evacuated people to safe camps, but they really are in need of help in all aspects." A victim, Alhaji Abdullahi Isyaku,told newsmen that he was lucky as non of his family members at home when the storm occurred. "My wife and three children were in Birnin Kebbi when the storm occurred and I thought it was the storm before the rainfall. " It destroyed my house completely as you can see the house had been reduced to rubles; and it cost me about N5 million to build recently. "I consider it an act from God as He does what He wishes and when He wishes," he said. Isyaku called on the state and federal government to assist the victims in every way they could in order to reduce the impact and hardship.
