Osinbajo, economic team meet ahead budget assent Mr Olumide
By Lawrence Olaoye Acting President Yemi Osinbajo yesterday presided over the meeting of the Presidential Economic Management Team which commenced the review of the recently passed N7.44 trillion 2017 budget by the National Assembly. This is coming as the Senior Special Assistant to the President on media and publicity, Laolu Akande, in a tweet said the Presidency has yet to receive the details of the budget as passed. Akande in a tweet as the meeting was underway yesterday stated "Ag president Osinbajo presiding over economic Mgt Team reviewing major issues, 2017 budget and others. In attendance are minister & CBN gov." The National Assembly had last Thursday passed the N7.44 trillion budget as against the initial estimate of N7.28 trillion presented by President Muhammadu Buhari at a joint session of the National Assembly last year. Details of the budget showed that N434.4 billion was appropriated for statutory transfers to the National Judicial Council (N100 billion); Niger Delta Development Commission (N64.02 billion); Universal Basic Education (N95.2 billion); National Assembly (N125 billion); Public Complaints Commission (N4 billion); INEC (N45 billion); and National Human Rights Commission (N1.2 billion). Also yesterday, the acting President Yemi Osinbajo met behind closed doors with some top security Chiefs at the Presidential Villa, Abuja. The meeting was to review a memorandum for maritime security in the country. The memorandum will be presented to the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting for consideration and approval tomorrow. Those at the meeting included the Chief of Defense Staff (CDS), Gabriel Olonisakin and the National Security Adviser (NSA), Babagana Monguno. Others were the Minister of Defense, Mansur Dan-Ali and the Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi. Speaking with State House correspondents at the end of the meeting, the Minister of Defense said "It's a pending issue of FEC meeting that we wanted to resolve on maritime surveillance and it has been resolved. On steps taken to end oil theft, he said "Acting President has been meeting with the communities. We have been able to save many communities of oil pipeline bombings and oil theft. It is a big achievement and I believe that the Acting President has been doing well in that direction."
