Alleged wife's murder: Delta politician remanded in Kuje prison Mr Olumide By Paschal Njoku, Abuja A Delta-state born politician, Charles Eni-Umukoro has been remanded in Kuje prison over an allegation that he murdered his wife, Mrs Louisa. Louisa, a former Director in the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), died in April 2016 on suspected murder after autopsy report from the National Hospital Abuja diagnosed subdural hemorrhage as cause of her death. The criminal charge followed a complaint by the deceased family member, Eliab U. Ukponmwan of Oredo Local Government Area, Edo State, who cited several incidents of violence between the couple. Trial judge, Justice Mary-Anne Anenih of the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory Maitama gave the remand order after Umukoro was docked on a one-count charge of alleged murder. The defendant will be confined in prison custody pending the hearing of his bail application on May 19. The Inspector General of Police (IGP) had in February charged Umukoro with culpable homicide, which is punishable with death under Section 221 of the Penal Code. The one count charge alleged that Umukoro caused the death of the woman by "Hitting her on the head which caused internal hemorrhage with the knowledge that her death would be the probable consequence." However, moves by defence counsel, Godwin Emagun to stop the appearance of Jibrin Okutepa, SAN as the prosecutor in the case was aborted. He had wanted the court to order that Umukoro should continue the administrative bail granted him by the police. But Justice Aninih overruled him on both issues and ruled that he has not made any point. The judge upheld the submission of the prosecution counsel that he will require more time to reply to the application.
