our adult residents of Korago residential area of Bajoga in Funakaye Local Government Area of Gombe State are standing trial before the state High Court No. 10 sitting at Tudun Wada, Gombe, for allegedly defiling their six-year-old neighbour’s daughter, a primary one pupil.
Adamu Sani (Bappa Yaya), Adamu Audu (Kurma Waja), Mohammad Abubakar (Manmada) and Husaini Yahaya (Alhaji), all of the same address, were arrested by operatives of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) over the alleged rape of the six-year-old pupil (name withheld).
The court heard that the accused had on October 20, 2016, called the daughter of their neighbour and forcefully had carnal knowledge of her.
The prosecuting counsel, Barrister Mubarakatu Saleh Hassan, told the court that the second, third and fourth accused persons committed the offense contrary to Section 282 and punishable under Section 283 of the Penal Code.
All the accused persons pleaded not guilty when they appeared before the court on April 10 and the prosecution counsel asked for a date to present her witnesses.
At the resumed sitting, Barrister Mubarakatu, accompanied by Barrister Sadiya Mohammed Waziri, presented two witnesses, the victim’s father, Inuwa Malam and the girl, who all testified before the court.
After cross examination of the witnesses by both the prosecuting and defence counsels, the prosecuting counsel asked for a new date to call the remaining witness.
The presiding judge, Justice Paul Idi Apolos, granted the application and adjourned the case to June 15.
However, he ordered that the accused persons be remanded in prison custody.
